5 Popular Myths (And the Real Truth) About Granite Countertops

People write all sorts of things about granite countertops. You could spend all day browsing online articles and still never cover them all. The good news is that much of what you read would be true. The bad news is that there are still plenty of myths floating around.

We want Bedrock Quartz customers to be fully informed about granite countertops before investing in them. That’s why we encourage a visit to one of our many Utah showrooms. Getting your information directly from an expert is better than searching online for information that may or may not be trustworthy.

With that in mind, here are five popular myths about granite countertops, along with the real truth:

Myth #1: Granite Countertops Are Indestructible

There is no shortage of people who believe granite countertops are indestructible. That belief might be rooted in granite being a natural stone. Regardless, it is still not true.

Granite is a great countertop choice because it is durable and exceptionally hard. But it can still chip or crack if subjected to extreme impact force. Drop something heavy on a granite countertop and you can crack it. So you still need to be careful with granite.

Myth #2: Granite Is a High-Maintenance Material

Next up is the myth that granite is a high-maintenance material. We are not sure where this particular myth comes from. Yet the fact remains that granite requires relatively little maintenance if proper daily care is observed.

The extent of it is usually sealing the countertop once per year. A countertop subjected to excessive wear and tear may have to be sealed more frequently. Sealing protects against chips, cracks, and stains. A properly sealed granite countertop can be cleaned with mild soap and water.

Myth #3: Granite Is a Bacteria Breeding Ground

We have had customers express reservations about granite countertops because of the mistaken belief that granite is a bacteria breeding ground. Although granite is a porous stone capable of providing a suitable home for bacteria, things change once it is sealed. Sealed granite will not harbor bacteria. Therefore, it is completely safe for food preparation.

Myth #4: Granite Does Not Hold Up Well to Heat

Yet another myth about granite countertops is that they do not hold up well against heat. The truth behind this myth is predicated on your definition of holding up well.

Granite is a natural stone. It will not buckle or crumble if you place a hot pot or pan on it. Occasional exposure to hot liquids will not be a problem either. But consistent exposure to high heat can cause discoloration and small fissures. Neither harms the integrity of a granite countertop, but both are aesthetically displeasing.

Myth #5: Granite Countertops Are Prohibitively Expensive

Finally, don’t believe the myth that granite countertops are prohibitively expensive. A lot of what goes into the price of a slab is dictated by type, color, and source. There are many types of granite that are actually affordable enough to fit into a typical middle-class budget.

Granted, you will pay more for a granite countertop than you will for a laminate. But granite can be moderately priced and often is. If the most affordable granite is still outside of your budget, you can always consider a quartz countertop manufactured to mimic the look of real granite.

Granite is a wonderful choice as a countertop material. If you are thinking about investing in it, we encourage you to visit a Bedrock Quartz showroom. Our team is standing by to answer all your questions with reliable and verifiable answers.
