Part of our responsibility to customers is to keep an eye on kitchen design trends to ensure we have the right products in stock. Leading up to the start of 2025, there were several prominent trends in play. We are now a couple or so months into the new year. Here is what we are seeing with marble in particular: bold and beautiful.
It is true that homeowners tend to choose a more understated marble for a classic and elegant look. But we have noticed growing demand for more colorful marble slabs. We have also seen more interest in bolder and more complicated veining patterns. Consumers are combining colorful marble and complicated veining patterns with bright and bold backsplashes for a completely different look.
Setting Neutral Colors Aside
Neutral colors are always a good choice for interior design. They are easy to work with and maintain a home’s resale value. But after more than a decade of Modern Farmhouse and other similar styles, it appears as though consumers are setting those neutral colors aside. They want their interior spaces to pop.
In the kitchen, consumers are looking more frequently at marble featuring bold pinks and blues. Even black has recently shown a resurgence. But what is really interesting is talking to customers about their plans for a new backsplash.
One way to go is to choose a backsplash with complementary colors. The colors blend nicely with understated marble for a clean and balanced look. But another option is to go with a contrasting color. Imagine black marble with a bright blue backsplash. Or imagine blue marble with a green or brown backsplash.
Solid Colors and Veining
When going bold and beautiful with marble countertops, there is always the risk of choosing a veining pattern so complex that it overwhelms the space entirely. We have seen photographs of more than one kitchen in which this was a problem. A good way to overcome a complex veining pattern is to choose a solid color for the backsplash. A neutral color on the walls and/or cabinets also helps.
From a design standpoint, it’s a good idea to figure all of this out before making any purchases. If need be, for budgetary reasons, select your marble countertop first. Then make your other choices based on the countertop color and veining complexity.
Nature Does the Heavy Lifting
Interior design concerns aside, one of the things we love most about marble is how it is formed. Marble is a metamorphic rock formed with carbonate minerals that have crystallized after being subject to intense heat and pressure over many years. In essence, nature does all the heavy to create this wonderful natural stone.
Marble starts as limestone infused with a variety of minerals. As heat and pressure increase, the minerals recrystallize to create a non-foliated, crystalline texture. Veining patterns are the direct result of the influence of heat and pressure on the mineral deposits.
Over many years of metamorphosis, the minerals are crushed, spread out, and recrystallized. They move through the limestone randomly, creating veining patterns that are unique to every quarried rock.
You Can Be Bold With Marble
We hope you have found this discussion on marble both educational and fascinating. Here’s the point we want to drive home: you can go bold and beautiful with marble. Do not assume that all marble countertops create a reserved and laid-back aesthetic. It doesn’t have to be that way. If you like color and intense veining patterns, marble is still a good choice. Pair it with the right backsplash and you’ll have a winner. See the comparison in person at one of our Utah showrooms.
