Bedrock Quartz customers have choices when it comes to edge profiles. They don’t have to settle for a simple squared edge that seems out of place within the grand scheme of things. We offer multiple choices, all of which can be seen by visiting any of our Utah showrooms.
Let’s look at three such choices: ogee, bullnose, and mitered. All three are good choices for the modern kitchen featuring a stone material like quartzite or marble.
The Ogee Edge
The ogee edge is easily recognizable by its curved ‘S’ shape. Technically, you don’t get the entire ‘S’; you just get the lower half. Nonetheless, it presents an elegant and classic look. It is pretty much a concave arch flowing into a convex curve. To some homeowners, it looks like a throwback to ancient Greek and Roman styling.
It seems especially popular in kitchens featuring a traditional or classic aesthetic. If nothing else, the ogee edge is bold. It is an excellent choice if your kitchen is heavy on the decorative elements. It’s not a good look for the modern farmhouse or industrial aesthetic.
The Bullnose Edge
Next is the bullnose edge, an edge with a look easily described by its name. Think of the rounded nose of a bull. That’s exactly what you get with this particular edge. It is a fully rounded edge with a smooth, curved surface that is often soft to the touch thanks to fine finishing. It’s the ideal choice for high-traffic homes – especially when there are kids involved.
Its main advantage should be apparent: no sharp corners or edges. Homeowners can opt for the full bullnose, the half bullnose, and the demi bullnose. You can see examples of all three at any of our Utah showrooms.
As for kitchen styles, the edge blends very well with both modern and traditional. It is probably the most versatile of all edge profiles and fully compatible with granite, marble, quartzite, and quartz. We have heard some designers describe it as very approachable.
The Mitered Edge
The mitered edge is so named because it creates an illusion through mitering. The illusion is one of a thicker countertop achieved by joining two pieces of stone at a 45-degree angle. It is a favorite when thinner slabs are being used because it creates visual bulk.
Mitered edges are often described as being sophisticated and modern. They certainly represent a way to get more visual substance without spending more on a thicker slab. But the mitered edge is a sharp edge. Bump into it and it could hurt. Mitered edges are also more prone to damage if you slam something into them. But a damaged edge can be repaired.
Choosing the Right Style for Your Kitchen
We finally get to the big question so many homeowners ask in our showrooms: which edge profile is right for my kitchen? Bedrock Quartz only fabricates and installs stone countertops. We can’t decide for you on the best option. But we recommend considering the following:
- Safety (do you still have small children at home)
- Overall kitchen style and aesthetic
- The amount of use the kitchen gets for actual cooking
- The amount of maintenance you’re willing to put into your countertops
- How decorative you want the edge profile to be
Once again, you can see all our edge profile choices by paying a visit to one of the Bedrock Quartz showrooms throughout the state of Utah. Before investing in new stone countertops, come check out the edges. See them in person. You will be glad you did.
