One of our recent blog posts tackled the question of testing marble countertops to see if they need resealing. This post is a follow-up. It will answer a new but related question: what kinds of sealers are available for granite and marble?
As you read, bear in mind that the information is general in nature. We always recommend investing in a sealer specifically designed for your countertop surface. If you are ever in doubt, ask before you seal.
General Sealers for Both
There are some general sealers that can be used for both granite and marble. Whether or not you will get the best results is hit-or-miss. General sealers are not necessarily designed specifically for granite or marble countertops. So take that under advisement.
Of utmost concern is choosing a sealer that is compatible with your particular countertop. If you don’t know what that means, contact the company from which you purchased your countertops. You can also reach out to the installer if you have contact information.
Three Types of Sealers
Our industry generally works with three types of sealers. When we speak of ‘types’ we are referring to composition and performance. Here are the three sealer types:
1. Topical
A topical sealer is a chemical solution that lies on top of the surface where it dries and cures. Topical sealers are readily available and usually affordable. The downside is that they wear out more quickly than the other two sealer types. A topical sealer may not be a good choice for granite with a sandblast or leather finish.
2. Impregnating
An impregnating sealer is a chemical solution that actually penetrates and seeps into natural stone. Once again, you can find impregnating sealers for both marble and granite. An impregnating product is often recommended for marble due to its high porosity. You really want something that seeps into marble so as to make sure the entire surface is treated.
3. Nanotech
The new kid on the block is the nanotech sealer. It is so named because it contains nanoparticles that actually bond with the stone underneath. A nanotech sealer is highly durable and capable of protecting both marble and granite against water, chemicals, and more.
More About Nanotech Sealers
Although we will not go so far as to recommend a nanotech sealer over one of the other two options, we do think it’s important to explain a little bit more about this technology. For starters, nanotech sealers are purposely designed to provide a long-lasting barrier between sealer and stone surface.
Nanotech sealers are:
- Water based and non-toxic.
- Hydrophobic and oleophobic.
- UV-resistant.
- Breathable.
Should you choose a nanotech sealer, make sure you choose one designed for countertops. Nanotech formulas are found in all sorts of sealers, some of which you would not want on your counters. Also note that nanotech sealers can be expensive.
Follow All of the Instructions
We trust that you’ll read and make sure you understand the instructions that come with your sealer. Here’s a pro tip: follow all the instructions to the letter. Do not cut corners unless you are willing to accept a substandard finished product. Remember that manufacturers know how their sealers work. They know the best way to apply them.
You have choices when it comes to sealers for marble and granite countertops. Invest in a quality product with a solid reputation. A high-quality sealer will protect your countertops for the longest possible time. In doing so, they will keep your marble or granite looking as beautiful as it was the day it came out of the quarry.
